Cost to Learn

There are several levels of licensing. How far you decide to go will depend on your ambitions and budget.

Getting Started

A trial instructional flight is always a good place to start. For $115 you will learn about the controls of your plane, as well as you flying the plane in a 30 minute flight. This is a great opportunity to see how you like flying and how flying training is done! More information on the $115 Trial Flight can be found here!

Student Pilot Licence

A student pilot licence will cost you $5 and is valid forever.
To fly your first solo you will need an aviation medical certificate. These typically cost between $70-$120, depending on your age and other factors.

A current listing of medical examiners can be obtained on the web, by e-mail or by phone. CASA Medical Examiner Web site – or phone 131 757
It costs $190 per hour flying in a Jabiru J-160 that seats two average adults*. You only get charged for the time the engine is running (to the nearest 1/10th of an hour). A typical lesson may include 30 minutes of theory, a 10 minute plane inspection, 60 minute flight and 15 minute de-briefing.
The training is done in phases:
Phase 1 is to go solo in the circuit. (that is to fly by your self) You must be 16 years old
and hold a Student Pilot Licence. You must pass a pre solo Theory Exam.
Phase 2 is to go solo in the training area. You must pass a pre area solo Theory Exam.
Phase 3 is the General Flying Progress Test (GFPT) which allows you to carry passengers
in the training  area. You must pass a Basic Aeronautical Knowledge Theory Exam and a Flight Test. (You do not have to do this test if you don’t want to carry passengers and go straight to Phase 4.)
Phase 4 is Navigation Training to allow to fly virtually anywhere in the world. You must pass a Private Pilot Theory Exam and a Flight Test. The cost of the Theory Study books is app. $ 350.00 depending on what you get. CASA legal books, documents and charts cost another app. $ 300.00. Now that you are able to carry passengers you can invite up to two people who can share the cost of your lessons.

On top of your PPL there are several other endorsements that you can do including night flying, aerobatics and many others.

Phase 5 is Commercial Pilot Licence Training. That allows you to fly for a living. If you indicate your intention to do an integrated CPL at the beginning of your training, the minimum hours are a Total time of 150 hours including of 70 hours in command, and it’s GST FREE. If you do not train for the CPL in the integrated system you need a total time of 200 hours including 100 hours in command, unfortunately, you have to pay GST on that.

Air Transport Pilot Licence

This is what you need to work as a Captain for the Airlines. After 1500 hours of experience you can go for it!
The Diploma or Advanced Certificates will also help you to convince the airlines that YOU are one for them.
